“It’s our third time looping around the block,” Cliff grumbled at me from the driver’s seat. “I’m starting to think you scammed us to get more Pop-Tarts.”

Both the dogs and Rick and Charlie Astle had disappeared without a trace from this neighborhood. All signs pointed to the werewolf lurking in these uniform lines of white-shutter houses, but once again, I couldn’t sense anything out of the ordinary.

For all I could tell, these humans mowing their lawns, gathering mail, and walking their dogs were just that. Only human.

“Maybe I need to get closer,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck.

“Maybe?” Cliff glanced at me, his square jaw ticking. “I was hoping for something a little more solid than ‘maybe.’ I thought you knew what you were doing.”

“I never had to sense any monsters before running into you two, so stop being a dick.”

Behind me, Jon stifled a laugh.

I flew over to his window, pressing my hand against the warm glass. “I don’t have to do anything. It’s as intuitive as smelling or hearing,” I said over my shoulder. “When the werewolf is near us, I’ll know. I promise.”

“We can’t waste our time circling this street all day. A few of these folks look ready to call the cops.” Cliff eyed a surly old man standing on the porch of the corner house. When we had first driven through, he’d been sitting inside by the window.

Cliff parked the car in front of Rick and Charlie’s neglected two-story home. Although they had vanished about a week ago, I swore I could sense the abandonment of the structure. I stared at the dark upper-floor window, wondering if the victims had been killed in the home, their corpses hidden away. For all I knew, there were spirits staring back at me through the dark panes. Would they be trapped here when the home was inevitably occupied by a new family?

“I already told you,” I sighed, frustration and sadness battling as I looked between the hunters. “This house is empty. It’s a dead end.”

“Hold your horses, sweetheart. It’s my turn,” Cliff said, studying himself in the rearview mirror. He made small, hasty adjustments to his hair and clothes. My gaze drifted to the house again—then to the neighboring one, where a young housewife was tending her garden.

With a wink, he climbed out of the car.

“What’s he doing?” I asked when it became clear that Jon was staying behind with me. I scrunched my face at the sight of Cliff’s easygoing gait and charming smile as he approached the woman. “This is hardly the time for him to pursue a new romantic chapter.”

Jon chuckled. “He’s just trying to get some last-ditch answers out of her. He’s already winning her over.”

“Seriously?” I said in a flat voice.

“Seriously. Watch.” Jon leaned closer, one hand braced beside me in front of the window. “He’s complimenting her dress. He’s telling her he never notices stuff like that.”

I scoffed, but sure enough, the woman smiled widely and gave a bashful look down at her simple sundress.
